Lascaux Caves, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, discovered in 1940 by 18-year-old Marcel Ravidat, is the setting of a complex of caves in southwestern France. The original caves, famous for its Paleolithic cave paintings, are located near the vIllage of Montignac, Dordogne. The paintings are estimated to be 17,300 years old, and primarily consist of images of large animals, most of which are known from fossil evidence to have lived in the area at the time. Opened to the public in 1948, visits by 1,200 visitors per day had visibly damaged the works. The cave was closed to the public in 1963 to restore the art. LASCAUX ii, A REPLICA, WAS OPENED IN 1983, 200 METERS FROM THE ORIGINAL.
