Description
Architect James O'Donnell, a Irish Protestant from New York, constructed the basilica. He converted to Catholicism and died in 1830, just a few months after the church's inauguration. The interior was supervised by parish priest Benjamin-Victor Rousselot, whose main inspiration was the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Victor Bourgeau, the diocese's most prolific architect, was hired by Rousselot. Work was completed around 1880.
